FUNNY MAN

MOHAMMED HANIF's put clever, dark humour back in English fiction from the subcontinent. Proof: His second uproarious but incisive novel, OUR LADY OF ALICE BHATTI

ELLE: Tell us a little bit about your new book...
MOHAMMED HANIF: It's about girls. Girls who work hard, fall in love, sometimes fall in love with the wrong guy, sometimes marry them. Oh, and sometimes they perform little miracles.

ELLE: What inspired you to write it?
MH: Nurses.

ELLE: Living in Karachi is?
MH: Yesterday was hell. Today is a lot better. Can't plan for day after tomorrow.

ELLE: Five clichés about Pakistan and Pakistanis that
amuse you most?
MH: All Pakistanis are NOT terrorists; Pakistan is a land of Sufis; we respect our women; our family values are best in the world; and our cricket team is unpredictable.

ELLE: What worries you most about the current situation in Pakistan, given the tumultuous year so far?
MH: When will the bijli come back.

ELLE: Which book are you reading now?
MH: Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes.

ELLE: Three books that mean a lot to you?
MH: Aunt Julia and The Scriptwriter by Mario VargasLlosa; Diwan-e-Ghalib by Mirza Ghalib; and Udaas Naslain by Abdullah Husain.
