How did the church convince many people to go fight in the crusades?

Three reasons:

1. Pope Urban II told people that if they fought and died, their sins would be washed away and they'd go to heaven.

2. Money; the Crusaders would raid and pillage, thus gaining some wealth.

3. Some people just wanted action and adventure in their life... what better way to get those then go on a killing spree?
