Why do iron objects turn reddish brown when exposed to air?

Oxygen in the air reacts with the iron, making a reddish brown compound known as iron oxide. Iron is a transition metal and we havent covered them in chemistry yet so i dont know exactly why but i think the iron atom takes two oxygen's electrons to fill its outer shell.
