Leaves are primarily composed of two main types of tissue: epidermal tissue and mesophyll tissue. The epidermis serves as a protective layer, while the mesophyll, which includes palisade and spongy mesophyll, is responsible for photosynthesis and gas exchange. The arrangement of these tissues allows leaves to efficiently capture sunlight and facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Additionally, vascular tissue, including xylem and phloem, is present to transport water, nutrients, and sugars throughout the plant.
