The average sale price of a home in the US in 2003 was about $250,000. That's a little misleading, though, since that "average" includes a very few homes that sold for much more (millions), and a lot of homes that sold for less. The "typical" home was closer to $190,000 or so.

Obviously, this also depends on where you're at. If you're trying to by a home in Manhattan NY, it's going to cost noticeably more than if you're buying an identical one in Manhattan KS.
