The original manuscripts of The Bible did not contain verse numbers, as the verses were added later for reference and ease of reading. The chapter and verse divisions we use today were developed over time, with the chapter divisions introduced by Stephen Langton in the 13th century and verse numbers added by Robert Estienne in the 16th century. As a result, the original texts of the Bible were written in continuous scrolls without the modern verse structure we are familiar with today.
