Downsizing in general refers to a reduction in the size of something. In terms of a company, downsizing often involves a reduction in personnel in order to cut costs. This is often the reasoning behind workers being laid off, with the excuse that their work is no longer necessary to the company. Similarly, one can downsize his or her house by moving to a smaller home to cut costs.
