Why is a basketball courts floor made of wood?

Typically Northern Hard Maple. Grades usually 3rd & better, 2nd & better, or 1st Grade Maple. Thickness is either 1/2", 25/32", or 33/32 by 2-1/4".

Probably the most common selected for a high school court is 25/32" and 2nd & Better grade.
