How does one dissuade a house cat from climbing into the branches of a Christmas tree?

Placing something on the Christmas tree that one's house cat does not like will dissuade it from climbing the tree. Not all cats dislike the same things so these may differ. A bitter cat-proof spray, a citrus-scented spray, a spray of peppermint or pungent oils applied on the lower branches. Wasabi paste, Tabasco sauce or citrus lightly applied on the trunk. Cotton balls dipped in nail polish remover placed under the tree, by its trunk. Hang orange peels or citrus-scented fresheners on the lower branches.
