Why do worker bees kill the drone bees?

Drones are male bees and their only purpose in life is to mate with a virgin queen. At the end of the 'season' when they are no longer required for breeding purposes, they are ejected from the hive by the worker bees. As they are unable to forage for food, they soon die.
