If no presidential candidate wins a majority of electoral votes (at least 270 out of 538), the election is decided by the House of Representatives. Each state delegation casts one vote for one of the top three candidates, and a majority of state delegations is required to win. The Senate simultaneously elects the Vice President from the top two candidates. This scenario has occurred three times in U.S. history, most recently in the election of 1824.
