How do characters and poet feel about the element of gold in Beowulf?

Gold is portrayed as a sense of identity. If you have gold it is known you have done something worthy as Beowulf did when he received gold from hrothgar by killing grendel and his mom. It's also has a symbolic function as beowulf says he would pass down his armor to his own son if he had one. Also it represents kinship and loyalty.
