Is an up-scaling DVD player necessary?

It is never necessary, however when watching a DVD on a HDTV it is helpful. Although not as good as a true HD movie like on an HD-DVD, upscaling DVDs can provide great image quality acceptable even on the highest resolutions like 1080p.
