The five-star admirals of the U.S. are a select group of naval officers who have achieved the highest rank in the United States Navy. There have only been four individuals to hold this rank: Admiral William D. Leahy, Admiral Ernest King, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, and Admiral William Halsey Jr. This rank was created during World War II to ensure unified command among the branches of the military. The five-star rank is largely ceremonial today, as no officers have been promoted to this rank since the end of the war.
