CHAMPUS, which stands for the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, was established in 1966. It was created to provide healthcare benefits to military personnel, their dependents, and certain retirees who were not eligible for care through military treatment facilities. CHAMPUS was later replaced by TRICARE in 1997, which expanded and modernized the healthcare options available to military families.
