Pheasant roosters are aggressive and dominant, protecting the

habitat and food supplies. Hens do not survive as well during

winter as roosters and tend to spend time under cover of dense

brush, fence lines and tree lines. In spring, they leave their

dense protective areas to find nesting sites. The make their nests

in former crop areas and wheat fields. Newly hatched pheasants'

primary food is insects and they spend their first summer in wheat

fields that have been harvested.
