Who are the press?

The press are the owners, editors journalists and staff that publish newspapers (you could perhaps extend it to cover broadcasting news too).
A high quality free (i.e. un-censored and unbiased) press is an important component of any democratic civilization, it is the means by which the voting public come to understand what is going on at a national/international level).

However, commercial pressures on obtaining ratings sometimes cause the press to intrude into people's (especially celebrities) lives to a degree which many find unacceptable - this is called the 'gutter press'.
