Why did the American bald eagle become extinct?

There is a Chemical called DDT in the 50s and 60s farmers would go up in crop dusting planes and spray this chemical on their plants to make them grow faster. The eagles died from it.

The bald eagle is not extinct, has made a remarkable recovery, and is now no longer an endangered species.
