First remember that the home came with a sheet detailing what the R-Values where in each area, floor, ceiling and walls. This can usually be found on the door just under the kitchen sink in HUD homes. If your home is not HUD certified or you can not find the label, then the next best thing is to add a reasonable amount, based on your conditions. This is best determined using the values found in the International Residential Code or by asking the Building Official in your jurisdiction. For instance, in my area the prescriptive solutions for insulation would be, R-13 in the walls, R-30 in the ceiling and R-19 in the floors. Your values will probably be different. Another good source might be a licensed insulation contractor in your area. They usually know the required values. A Word of CAUTION
