Big Box stores like Walmart and Target have distribution centers that service their stores. Grocery stores have centrally located distribution centers to keep their shelves stocked. Electrical suppliers, hardware, Plumbing and just about every industry imaginable makes use of a distribution center.

The advantage of having a well-stocked inventory in a central location, makes distribution centers an important part of most manufacturers, parts suppliers and other companies whose business requires the distribution of a product or products. The cost savings of having everything under one roof plus the ability to keep close watch on all the inventory are a few of the main reasons distribution centers exist.

A distribution center can have a number of different jobs that need to be filled. A shipping department will be responsible for arranging transportation to get the item(s) where they need to go. A fork lift driver may be needed to move heavy pallets and stack them on shelves in the warehouse. A Picker has the responsibility of pulling items off the shelf to fill orders. Others may be needed to maintain the large building. There is also a need for someone to take orders and enter customer information into the computer.

A good distribution center worker will be proficient at his or her particular work assignment and also be versatile enough to step in and perform some of the other functions inherent in the operation of such a facility. You may required to be on your feet for 8 hours and you will probably be doing a lot of walking, bending, stretching and lifting over the course of your shift.

Working for a large company, you probably will be offered health insurance, a retirement savings plan and a number of other fringe benefits. The pay is moderate at best for most of the workers, although there are opportunities to move up to a management position which pays much better.

If your not afraid of hard work, like working in a fast-paced environment and are willing to work for five hundred dollars or so per week, a position in a Distribution Center might be just right for you.
