The legal age of majority with the exception of four states is 18. In Alabama and Nebraska it is 19, in Mississippi and Pennsylvania it is 21. You can apply for emancipation sooner. The legal age of majority for the state is 18. Virginia has grounds and procedures for the emancipation of a person who is at least 16-years of age. This law does not necessarily mean the emancipated minor will be allowed to live independently. Emancipation generally pertains to the termination of parental obligation thereby making said minor a ward of the court and subject to be placed in a group or foster home until they reach the age of majority. Virginia Statute Title 161 262-331.
