The national anthem of the United States, "The Star-Spangled Banner," was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. Key penned the lyrics after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The music for the anthem is based on a popular British song composed by John Stafford Smith. It was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1931.
