In the early teen and twenties years, my step-father, Herbert Stabler, played steel guitar for the band. Hank was born and raised in Butler County, Alabama. Herb was born in Fort Deposit, Alabama in nearby Lowndes County (about 30 miles from Georgianna). Herb played with Hank, off and on, until he joined the Air Force during WWII. I have pictures on Herb on stage with Hank and the other band members.

During his Air Force years (he retired in 1965), Herb played in bands all over the country and Europe. He opened for Minnie Pearl, played onstage with George Jones, and many of the early country music pioneers.

Herb and his son Lazaar (Lance) settled in Fort Walton Beach, Florida where Lance completed high school at Choctawhatchee High School. Lance later joined the Navy and after a few years, became an art teacher and football coach in Camilla, Georgia, where he successfully helped to lead his teams to regional championships. Lance bears a striking resemblance to his cousin, Kenny Stabler of NFL fame. He and his wife Elaine still live in Georgia, where he is retired from the school system, and he now devotes his time to his art creations and piloting small aircraft. His two sons, Brian and Derik live close by.

I was the recipient of many "Hank, Sr." stories...many tales of brawls at honky-tonks, wild car rides down country roads, sobering Hank up enough to get him onstage, good and bad times all!
