The most obvious answer is the length of the beak. In adult birds, the male's beak is much thicker and longer. The body of a male is also thicker set, but this isn't always easy to see if the kookaburra you're looking at is alone. But the beak is distinctive
Juvenile male's are not so obvious - they are similar in size and shape in both body and beak size to females.
