How do you prepare for your first horse?

I am in the same boat as you. Don't buy any rugs, saddle, saddle cloth/numnah, or head collar and bridle as you don't know what the horse will be coming with and the sizes. You need to know where the horse will be kept and whether it will be OK in a stable or kept out, You also need to find out if it gets on with other horses and can be hacked alone or in company. When my friend got her first horse she was a lovely connemara mare called blaze and she came with some of the most oldest tack ever but luckily her parents could find a place that re-built saddles.
