This is determined by the digit in the seventh position of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

In an example VIN (this is not a valid VIN), the bolded and italicized digit is the seventh:

1G1YY24U955511356

For this example it indicates the vehicle would have been assembled at either the Orion assembly plant or the Scarborough assembly plant.

This changed in 1972, so the assembly location of older models cannot be determined by this code. Below is the code for each assembly plant:

  • A = Lakewood
  • B = Baltimore
  • C = Lansing (B)
  • D = Doraville
  • E = Linden
  • F = Flint (Chevy)
  • G = Framingham
  • H = Flint (Buick)
  • J = Janesville
  • K - Kosai U = Hamtramck
  • K = Leeds
  • L = Van Nuys
  • M = Lansing
  • N = Norwood
  • P = Pontiac (Pontiac)

  • T = Tarrytown
  • V= Pontiac (GMC)
  • W = Willow Run
  • X = Fairfax
  • Y=Wilmington
  • Z = Fremont
  • 1 = Wentzville or Oshawa #2
  • 2 = Moraine (T&B) or St. Therese
  • 3 = Detroit (T&B) or St. Eustache
  • 4 = Orion or Scarborough
  • 5 = Bowling Green or London
