Reindeer, or caribou, typically breed in the fall, with mating occurring from late September to early November. During this time, males compete for females through displays of strength and dominance. After a gestation period of about 230 days, females give birth to a single calf, usually in late spring. This timing allows the calf to benefit from the abundant food resources available during the summer months.
