The answer to this question depends on many factors. What type of ship are we talking about, is it by itself or operating with slower vessels. what kind of weather, how much of a hurry is it in? There are 3291 nautical miles from Norfolk to Rota. Ask your First Lieutenant or the ship's Navigator, for the ship's best economical cruising speed. Divide 3291 by the best economical cruising speed in knots and you will get an answer in hours. That will be the length of the voyage. Assume 13 knots for a cruising speed and the trip will take 10 and a half days. Make sure you go out on deck in the middle of the Mid Watch. Sit on an Anchor Windlass and watch the water go by. You will be surprised how peaceful it is. I spent 6 years at Rota. I was in the NAS ROTA Aircraft Maintenance Department from 1964 t0 1967, and on the U.S.S. Holland (As-32) from 1968 to 1971. We were tied up in the Port Department for 3 years. Stop in the Tokyo Bar and have one for me.
