Pocahontas lived in what is now Virginia, specifically in the area of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Native American tribes. She was born around 1596 and spent much of her life in the region near the James River, where her father, Chief Powhatan, was the leader. The settlement of Jamestown, established by English colonists in 1607, was nearby and played a significant role in her life.
