Why did Florence Nightingale go to the Crimean war?

Because the greatest cause of death of British soldiers in the Crimean war was disease, and the powers that be at the time had not made preparations for this. She had to fight the government in order to obtain permission and funds, and as a result thousands of lives were saved and she laid the foundations of modern nursing.
