On the night of April 20, 1989, the Central Park Five, a group of Black and Latino teenagers, were in Central Park, participating in a series of activities that included playing Basketball and hanging out with friends. They were among a larger group of youths in the park, but their night took a drastic turn when they were wrongfully accused and arrested in connection with the assault and rape of a jogger, Trisha Meili, which occurred that same night. The incident led to a highly publicized trial and a miscarriage of justice that highlighted issues of race, police conduct, and media portrayal. Ultimately, they were exonerated in 2002 after the real perpetrator came forward.
