When the Olympic games (776B.C) were created, they only had one event: The stadium race, a short sprint measuring the length of an ancient greek stadium, which was around 180-240 metres. The participants had to pass by five pole-markers that divided the lanes: one at the start, three in-between and another at the finish line.

As the years passed, more games were added: diaulos (running around the stadium twice), dolichos (18-24 stadium laps walking), hoplitodromos(=greek for 'hoplite race) which was running either twice or four times around the stadium in full armour.

As for other events there were boxing, Wrestling (common to the greco-roman wrestling in the modern Olympics), pagrateion (a sort of Martial Arts style of fighting were everything was allowed apart from eye-gauging, biting and kicking in the testicles) chariot racing and also a pendathlon made up of wrestling, running a stadium, long jump, javelin throw and discus throw.
