What was the strongest or most effective symbolism in moby-dick?

Even the greatest hate, that of vengeance in the end will really only hurt you and those you love more than repair the damage that caused the hate in the first place. Also that great negative emotion can cause great pain. No symbolism that I can see (but to me allegory sucks so I try not to find it)
