Robert Ray (born September 26, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa) succeeded Robert D. Fulton as the thirty-eighth Governor of Iowa, serving between January 16, 1969 and January 14, 1983. Following the end of Ray's term as Governor, Terry Branstad (born November 17, 1946 in Leland, Iowa) became the thirty-ninth Governor of Iowa, serving between January 14, 1983 and January 15, 1999.
