Aphids, beetles, borers, leafhoppers, mites, slugs and whiteflies are common pests of Althea plants. The flowering woody plant in question (Hibiscus syriacus) attracts aphids, European corn borers, Japanese beetles, potato leafhoppers, slugs, stalk borers, two-spotted spider mites and whiteflies. Insects pests also threaten Althea plants with bacterial, fungal and viral diseases such as blight, canker, leaf spot, powdery mildew and wood rot, since aphid honeydew encourages gray mold.
