Lennon was the rhythm guitarist, although he occasionally played keyboards, bass and lead guitar on some tracks.
In the early days of the band, he was seen as the leader; Paul McCartney has acknowledged Lennon as "the guy you wanted to sit next to on the bus". Lennon was also the main songwriter in the band until around 1965; he wrote 11 out of the 14 songs on A Hard Day's Night.
Later his role diminished a little; during the studio years, McCartney's musical skill brought him more to the fore in the band.
Brian Epstein described Lennon as "the mind of The Beatles".
