The term "muckrakers" means those who investigate or "dig up" political or corporate corruption. The term is also applied to journalists who assume an adversarial position against certain political activities.

The term is based on a phrase used in Pilgrim's Progress(1678) and was first applied to the investigative journalists of the Progressive Era, shortly before and after the beginning of the 20th century.
