In the United States, a D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine) is equivalent to an M.D. with exactly the same rights and privileges - for example, a D.O. can prescribe drugs and perform surgery just like any M.D. The medical training of an American D.O. is identical to an M.D. and they are often found in the same residency programs or same practice. Legally a D.O. is considered a medial physician in all 50 states. The same cannot be said for a chiropractor.
