Due to tradition, men were considered masculine, aggressive, brave, and that they would make good soldiers and so they fought in the war. The females stayed at home and kept the economy from collapsing they did jobs that were considered fit for males and females, such as driving tractors, putting weapons together, etc. This event proved that the gendered occupational segregation was unfair and only created in regards to differences in productivity.
