John the Evangelist in boiling oil?

Tradition holds that during the Roman persecution of Christians, John the Evangelist was thrown into boiling oil but miraculously survived unharmed. This event is not recorded in The Bible but is mentioned in early Christian writings. John then went on to live a long life spreading the teachings of Christianity.
