Are secateurs and pruners the same thing?

They certainly serve a similar purpose. Generally speaking secateurs are used one handed and or for smaller branches. Pruners may be much larger with longer handles for tackling thicker off shoots, though this is not always the case. It may also depend on the manufacturer, some call single handed 'secateurs' pruners.
