Why did Toyota discontinue production of the MR2 Spyder?

The MR2 Spyder was considered, for many years, the only sporty car of Toyota make. Its manufacture was discontinued in 2004 due to declining sales, generally attributed to cheaper (but otherwise similar) sports models becoming available from other car makers.
