More:
  • Capped Bust design: above the date on the front of the coin.
  • Seated Liberty and Barber designs:below the eagle on the reverse
  • Walking Liberty design: 1916 and some 1917 - below "In God We Trust";

    some 1917 and all later dates - on the back near the 8:00 position

  • Franklin: above the yoke of the Liberty Bell
  • Kennedy: 1964 - to the left of the stem of the olive branch on the reverse

    1965 to 1967 - no mint marks

    1968 to the present - on the front above the date

Letters could be any of the following, depending on the coin's date:

  • Blank = Philadelphia, up to 1979
  • P = Philadelphia, 1980-present
  • D = Denver, 1906-present
  • S = San Francisco, up to 1954 on circulating halves, 1968-present on proof coins
  • O = New Orleans (up to 1909)
  • CC = Carson City (1870-1893)

On the Seated Liberty dollars, the mint mark is below the eagle on the reverse. On the Morgan dollars it is on the reverse below the wreath. On the Peace dollars it is on the reverse below the Word"One". On the eisenhower dollar it is above the date, also above the date on the Susan B. Anthony dollar.
