The Articles of Confederation gave the national government few powers primarily to prevent the kind of tyranny experienced under British rule. The framers aimed to protect state sovereignty and individual liberties, fearing a strong central authority could become oppressive. As a result, the national government lacked the ability to impose taxes, regulate commerce, or enforce laws, which ultimately hindered its effectiveness and led to calls for a stronger federal system. This weakness highlighted the need for a new constitution, resulting in the creation of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
