What is 'hotel California' by the eagles about?

Twilight zone type thems- Swanky Hotel and Night club with you-know-what is a dead end trap for- well it"s another Hot Corner ( not California but you know) The dysfunctional dining room scene- yecch! is borrowed from Dante. Somebody thought the song was about Cancer. There is no mention of smoking, I doubt it. It is not explained how the narrator escapes the ( Fool"s Paradise) The theme is interesting but somewhat unsettling.
