Do pheasants dig in the snow for food because they smell the grain or do they remember where it was?

From my experience in pheasant hunting, they have a very good sense of smell. If you hunt with the wind, they fly early. Against the wind they kick late. I know sound sight and many other factors are in there, but taking all that into consideration I still believe they can smell just fine. They can also read, just find a posted sign and there will many birds there.
