The quagga, a subspecies of the plains zebra, became extinct primarily due to overhunting and habitat loss in the 19th century. European settlers in South Africa hunted them for their meat and skins, and competition with livestock for grazing land further diminished their populations. The last known quagga died in captivity at the Amsterdam Zoo in 1883. Conservation efforts have since focused on similar species, but the quagga itself is no longer found in the wild.
