What is going on when a bearded dragon lays on its side and its beard turns black?

Nothing. It's either a threat, showing off, or trying to soak up heat.

Or looking for it's pirate ship.... Just kidding. Usually that is how they show they are angry.

There is also another reason. Males get darker beards during breeding season.
