while there is alot to be said about this here are a few pointers:

  • timing- unlike what most people think the best time to prune is early spring or after the fruit has been picked and not in winter. if you prune in winter you get the highest mortality rate.
  • in the long run you want a short tree with sideways branches and lots of light. a bushy plant with no light will produce growth but no flowers, if you let it grow very tall it would be difficult to pick the fruit.
  • you can tie down branches growing upwards (which will produce little fruit) and force them to grow sideways thus gaining fruit at the expence of growth.
