Private ownership of lots and produce made Jamestown turn from starving disaster to a healthy successful little colony.
For six years Jamestown struggled under communal labor and property laws. Finally in 1613 Governor Dale assigned 3-acre plots to the original arrivals and and smaller plots to later arrivals. Very quickly production went up, plantings expanded, relations with the Indians improved and Virginia became a way better place.
